Manicure Monday: Chinese New Year Edition February 25, 2013

Saturday night was the Chinese New Year parade here in San Francisco. We were able to score a pretty sweet view from a rooftop along the parade route. The parade is one of the top ten parades in the world and the largest of it’s kind outside of Asia! It is also one of the few remaining night illuminated parades in the country. There were lots of dragons, lions, beautifully decorated floats, marching bands, martial arts groups, dancers, and of course a ton of firecrackers! Many of the groups in the parade incorporated snakes into their costumes or floats to celebrate the Year of the Snake. The finale featured the Golden Dragon, at 268 feet it is the longest dragon in the Western Hemisphere and requires more than 100 people to carry it.

On to the nails:

Year of the Snake

I used Gelish Hot Rod Red as the base color. The gold glitter is Julep Oscar and for the snake I used Nubar nail art pens in Mint, Neon Lime, Basic White and Black.

Manicure Monday February 18, 2013

I recently created some new designs for sugarshorts and fell in love with the following set:

5-Phonto1361202417504For this Manicure Monday I decided to recreate this design on my nails.

This design mostly uses polishes from the OPI Pirates of the Caribbean collection. This is one of my favorite polish collection of all time. I love the muted, dusty looking pastels.1-Phonto1361205287085

Manicure Monday: Super Bowl Edition February 4, 2013

Hi all! Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. Here’s the mani I did for the Super Bowl. I’m not into football at all and actually only caught the last few seconds of the game.

Manicure Monday: Gelish Little Princess January 28, 2013

I received the Gelish foundation and topcoat for christmas along with an LED light (thanks mom!). Through videos on youtube I learned that people were able to layer regular polish between Gelish foundation and topcoat and still get the wear of a gel manicure. I’ve been experimenting with this since Christmas. Every time I tried it I would get huge wrinkles in my nails. According to the videos I watched, these wrinkles were being caused be the regular polish not being dry before I cured the gel topcoat. So I tried again and waited forever before applying and curing the topcoat. And I got the same results. I tried several different times with different brands and types of polish but kept getting similar results. The only manicure that was a success with this method was Julep Mila that I showed you last week. It wasn’t a total success because the mani only lasted a couple days and gel should last a couple weeks. I went to the beauty supply store last week and picked up Gelish Little Princess.

Little Princess

According to the bottle and the display, Little Princess was a very pale whitish pink. As you can see, it is VERY shear! This is 3 coats! I usually hate shear polishes but, I really love this one! It’s kind of a “your nails but better” color. I will probably add some nail art over top of this in the next day or two but for now I am really enjoying this “palate cleanser”.

What do you think of Gelish Little Princess? I want to pick up a few more gel polishes but fear a new addiction! Any gel polishes you’d recommend?

Manicure Monday: Catching Up January 21, 2013

Sorry about my lack of posts the last couple of weeks. I’ve been settling into a new job and a new schedule. I took pictures of some of my manis over the past couple weeks and will share those with you now.

This first manicure is Julep Mila. I did this mani when I was planning on participating in Judi’s “Julep January” theme. Watch Judi’s eye opening video to find out why “Julep January” didn’t last very long. I knew the Julep bottles contained less polish than standard bottles but to see how much is actually contained in those bottles was enough to make me second guess my Julep Maven subscription. I’m still debating on whether I want to continue as a Julep Maven. On one hand I love the excitement of it but on the other hand I feel like I am getting ripped off. I’m most likely going to be cancelling in the next day or two before February’s box ships. What are your thoughts on the Julep Maven program?

For my next mani I wanted to incorporate the color of the year: EMERALD. I added a little leopard print and I was good to go!

Manicure Monday: Minx Technical Disco (a sort of review and comparison) December 31, 2012

Thanks for joining me for another edition of Manicure Monday. I’m posting much later than usual but it’s still Monday so I am still sticking to my schedule!

I picked up this Minx set a few months ago at Ulta. Minx used to be a salon only service but they now make an at home version of the product. I’ve been wanting to try Minx so I was excited to find these on sale. Here’s what the packaging looks like.

1-IMAG0706-1-1 2-IMAG0707-1-1

I chose the Technical Tribal print. The set comes with 16 manicure strips, 12 pedicure strips and 2 alcohol wipes to prep the nails.

3-IMAG0714

Technical Tribal is a shiny, mirror-like metallic tribal print of golds, magenta and black.4-IMAG0715-1 5-share-tmp-019 6-share-tmp-020 7-share-tmp-021

I do love this pattern but for the price (Minx sets retail for $18 at Ulta) I would rather buy Kiss Nail Dress (retails for around $8). I didn’t think Minx was any higher quality than Kiss to constitute the higher price. No matter how hard I tried I ended up with wrinkles at the tips of nearly every nail. The wrinkles are driving me nuts and they are already starting to peel back because of the wrinkles. The package said to rub the minx to warm it before removing it from the plastic and placing it on my nails. Next time I am going to try warming it with a blow dryer for a few seconds before applying instead of just warming it with my hands. I did warm them with the blow dryer after applying to try to get the wrinkles out but that didn’t work. Since Minx comes with 16 manicure strips you only have enough strips to do one complete mani but I like to add them to a plain manicure as an accent nail like I did HERE with Kiss Nail Dress. You can also check out a review I did on Kiss Nail Dress HERE. I’m curious to see how long these will last.

Have you tried Minx (at home or in a salon)? If so, what did you think?

Have a safe and happy New Years everyone!!

Manicure Monday: SantaCon Edition December 17, 2012

This past Saturday was SantaCon here in San Francisco. SantaCon is everyone’s chance to be Santa! Dress up as Santa or any of his merry helpers (elves, trees, reindeer, milk and cookies, etc) and spread the Christmas cheer! SantaCon originated in San Francisco in 1994 and now takes place in 37 countries and 276 cities. Ways of participating in SantaCon are passing out candy canes, giving toys to children, giving gloves/hats to homeless, having a snowball fight, etc. In general, Santa consumes many adult beverages during SantaCon and the entire city turns into a bar crawl.

Here are some pictures from the 2012 SF SantaCon:

PhotoGrid_1355636261308

Unfortunately the weather was cold and rainy but it was so much fun seeing red EVERYWHERE!!! Some people came up with some very creative costumes as well. Our little group was made up of a reindeer, a Christmas tree and a Santa.

I dressed as a Christmas tree for SantaCon so I decided to paint my nails with Christmas presents!

Manicure Monday: Birthday Mani Edition December 10, 2012

My birthday festivities began with a mani/pedi at Tootsie Toes with my good friend Erika. If you are in SF I definitely recommend this place. They really take their time so I never felt like my service was rushed. They are also good with nail art. I didn’t get any nail art this time but probably will on a future visit. Of course you all know that I usually do my own nails but it’s so nice to be pampered for a change. For this visit to the nail salon I chose my go to fall/winter shade – OPI We’ll Always Have Paris.

1-share-tmp-006

We’ll Always Have Paris is from OPI’s La Collection De France from Fall 2008. It applies wonderfully and only needs two coats. We’ll Always have Paris is a deep red with purple and brown undertones. It’s one of those dark vampy reds that is nearly black but never actually looks black. I hate when colors are so dark that they appear black on the nail. Not the case with this shade.

2-share-tmp-007

I added Kiss Nail Dress in Bustier on my ring finger.

4-share-tmp-009

Kiss Nail Dress is great for adding an accent nail like I did here. You can see a full review I did on Kiss Nail Dress HERE. Bustier is probably my favorite set. As you can see it comes with a mix of patterns that mix so well together to make an awesome mani! The great thing about Kiss Nail Dress is that they are stickers. Since they are stickers they don’t dry out like the ones made from real nail polish.
