Removing Nail Stains April 13, 2012

The yellow polish (Sephora by OPI IM Beauty) I used for my Baby Chicks left me with some seriously stained nails 😦 so I decided to try a few things using stuff I had at home rather than spending money on stain removers.

Here’s my arsenal:

Take a look at what my nails look like before trying any of these treatments. My pinky is the worst.

I tried the whitening toothpaste first. I just scrubbed it in for a good 2 minutes and then let it sit for another 2 minutes before washing it off.

This is how my nails looked after the toothpaste:

It definitely helped but there is still some yellowing there.

Next I tried lemon juice. I just stuck my fingers in the lemon like I was juicing the lemon with my fingers and I let them sit for about 5 minutes.

Here’s what my nails looked like after the lemon:

Next I mixed baking soda with lemon juice to make a paste. I let the paste sit on my nails for a couple minutes. I then scrubbed the paste into my nails for a couple of minutes and let it sit for a few more minutes.

In this next picture you can see the before and after. The top picture is from before starting these treatments and the bottom picture is after finishing the baking soda treatment.

Huge difference!! Since I did all the treatments in a row I’m not quite sure which one made the biggest difference but I definitely noticed the biggest difference after the baking soda so next time I have staining I would start with that one and see how much it helps.

I felt that all these treatments were very drying on my nails so I decided to do a hot oil treatment. To do this I put some hot water in a bowl. In a smaller bowl I put olive oil and set the smaller bowl inside the bowl with hot water. I put my fingers in the oil for a few minutes then rubbed the oil into my nails and hands.

If you have time you can wrap your hands in plastic wrap and then a warm towel. It’s super hydrating. I skipped this step and instead washed off the oil and rubbed in Lush Lemony Flutter.

I know there are a ton of other DIY recipes for removing nail stains. Have you tried any? Any recommendations? What about store bought products?

Wow, that’s a huge difference. Thanks for the post!:) Mine are stained sadly, mainly from a Amour cuticle remover (cheapie) I got from Trans Design. I wouldn’t recommend the Amour products and the cuticle remover went straight into the bin. It left horrid orange marks on my nails which are still there despite that this was about 8-10 weeks ago. They’re about half way down my nails now so slowly getting rid of them:)
